1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how the SvitSliv browser extension “SvitSliv — German, English words” (the “Extension”) handles information in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari. These versions share the same core extension code; browser-specific packaging and permissions may differ. The Safari extension is packaged inside a macOS app.

The Extension helps you quickly review German vocabulary in a micro-learning format: word cards from A1 to C2 with Ukrainian (DE→UA) or English (DE→EN) translations. The dictionary is larger than in earlier versions and works offline. The Extension is free and ad-free. We do not require sign-up and we do not receive your personal data on our servers through the Extension.

Because the Extension stores data only locally in your browser's extension storage and does not send it to SvitSliv servers, our role as controller under the GDPR is limited. For any privacy questions, please use the contact details above.

3. Data stored locally

All data the Extension stores about you stays in local extension storage in your browser. We do not sync it to the cloud or send it to SvitSliv servers.

This may include:

  • selected language pair (DE→UA or DE→EN);
  • card display settings (transcription, plural, example sentence, font size, number of translations shown — 1 or 2, hide translation, reverse direction, noun article colors, colored articles);
  • shuffle words on/off;
  • word filters (level A1–C2, part of speech, theme);
  • IDs of words marked as “already know”;
  • automatic reminder on/off, interval (10–1440 min), and auto-close timer;
  • last viewed index in the word deck;
  • Extension window position on screen;
  • Extension menu language (Ukrainian or English), if changed.

4. What we do not collect

The Extension does not collect names, email, passwords, browsing history, page content, location, advertising IDs, or payment data.

The Extension does not send any learning data to SvitSliv servers. Dictionaries (bundled DE→UA and DE→EN JSON files) are included in the Extension package, loaded on your device, and used offline. The Extension makes no network requests to SvitSliv servers.

5. Browser permissions

All browser versions request storage and alarms. Chrome and Edge additionally request system.display:

  • storage — save your settings and “already know” word list locally on your device.
  • alarms — show automatic reminders to open a word card on your chosen schedule.
  • system.display — Chrome and Edge versions only: read screen work area so the popup opens near the extension icon. Used only for positioning; display information is not stored on servers or sent to us.

The Extension does not use content scripts and does not read the content of websites you visit.

6. Browser-specific versions

Google Chrome: The Extension uses local extension storage for settings and learning progress, alarms for optional word reminders, and system.display to position its popup window.

Microsoft Edge: The Extension uses the same core code and requests the same storage, alarms, and system.display permissions as the Chrome version. It does not collect browsing history or website content, and it does not send learning data to SvitSliv servers.

Mozilla Firefox: The Extension uses local extension storage and alarms. Its Firefox package does not request system.display; popup positioning falls back to a saved or default position.

Apple Safari: The Extension is included in a macOS app, as required for Safari Web Extensions. It uses local extension storage and alarms. Its Safari package does not request system.display; popup positioning falls back to a saved or default position. The Safari version does not sync learning data to SvitSliv servers.

7. Third parties

We do not sell or share locally stored extension data with advertisers or analytics networks.

Your browser provider (Google, Microsoft, Mozilla or Apple) may process technical data under its own privacy policy. The Safari extension is distributed in a macOS app through Apple's App Store.

8. Retention and deletion

Data remains on your device until you:

  • uninstall the Extension from your browser, or
  • clear the Extension's local data using your browser's extension settings, or
  • change or reset settings in the Extension UI (⚙).

9. Your rights (GDPR)

Legal basis. Because all data is stored only locally on your device, we rely on legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) — keeping settings needed for the Extension to work on your device.

Where the GDPR applies, you have the right to:

  • access personal data you sent us directly (e.g. by email to edelhirschx@gmail.com);
  • rectification or erasure of such data;
  • lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority.

Data stored only in local extension storage is controlled by you via the browser (see §8).

10. Children

The Extension is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect children’s personal data through the Extension.

Minimum age: 16 (EU, GDPR) / 13 (USA, COPPA; UK, UK GDPR).

11. Changes

We may update this Policy. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use after changes means you acknowledge the updated Policy, to the extent permitted by law.

12. Other SvitSliv products

The browser extension is part of the SvitSliv ecosystem. The website and browser extension are free without ads; iOS and Android apps are free with a bottom banner ad. These products offer word cards and an offline dictionary, with additional features depending on the product:
